In 2016 we joined a small group tour to Bali. I wasn't expecting paradise, cynically knowing that paradise on earth has been pretty well obliterated by tourists like us trying to find it. Bali's economy is 80% tourism and every resident is touched by it. (By comparison, Hawaii's economy is 25% tourism.) Still... The Balinese seemed to have absorbed tourism while maintaining their own culture intact. Village connection still predominates, with long daily motorbike commutes to tourist venues. A pervasive and benign spirituality dominates Balinese life which revolves around daily religious rituals and frequent family and village ceremonies.
