We visited Guatemala during Easter of 1978. The physical and spiritual beauty of the countryside and its people made me long to extract the political ugliness brought by the Conquistadors and place a bell jar over a culture too innocent, fragile and unique to be surrendered to the onslaught of this evil world. Within a few years of our visit that ugliness festered again with a genocide of the Maya by the American-supported military regime.
